Synopsis

Simeiz is a small village on the southern coast of Crimea which is temporarily occupied by Russia. In the Soviet era, an underground gay resort arose in the village. It started with a small nudist beach; a popular bar and night club, Hedgehogs, appeared later in independent Ukraine. From the 1990s on, Simeiz became a significant meeting point for members of the LGBTQ+ community from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. Every year, about 4,000 people visited the place before the temporary occupation of Crimea by Russia in 2014. At the moment, Simeiz, as a gay resort, is threatened with disappearance due to the homophobic laws of the Russian Federation. If this happens, old photos and videos will be the only evidence of its existence and extinction.

Оповідач прикольний, час пролетів непомітно) Кінцівка тепла і зрозуміла мені. А початок...ці схили, боже. ..розплакалась. Дуже сумую за природою Криму.

Love for a place, the theme of fragments, a form of tradition, whether folk traditions or hyper modern traditions, the presence and voice of an individual. I come back to the same thought: this is a singular portrait of Ukrainianess that adds to a fascinating, humble chorus. Films in Crimean, portraits of Hutsul shepherds, Vylkove farmers or a drag queen, Zhanna Simeiz in a nascent gay paradise, these are just some of the portraits of a diverse Ukraine. Ukraine is a precious microcosm of Europe. The amputation of Crimea from Europe was a travesty, a crime that went unimpeded. It was a disgrace and films like this bring back life to a lost world. Damaged, faded, salacious images, splendid drag queens and the reminiscence of Zhanna shows an imperfect, rough place. It was a rare place of freedom for Ukrainian and Belarusian queer people who couldn't afford Western Europe. Zhanna and the director masterfully build the perverse clash between multiculturalism in Crimea, a queer microcosm and the rabid, intolerant imperialism of Muscovy. Taking and smashing. This is what Moscow has done with Crimea. Houses stolen, artifacts looted, monuments savagely destroyed, innocents tortured, hidden concentration camps. Crimea sinks into a mediocrity that only its liberation from ruscism can cure.
