LUTYI (FebrUaRY) – a post-documentary performative play by Varta Theatre and Nafta Theatre.
Lutyi is a Ukrainian word with two meanings. First, it's the name of the month February, when russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Second, it's an emotion – rage – the kind that arises when someone tries to destroy everything you love. The play LUTIY was born out of radically shifting circumstances and the intense experience of mass catastrophic events currently unfolding in Ukraine due to russian aggression.
The script is based on interviews with Ukrainian volunteers, soldiers of all genders, and personal statements of the actors themselves. We give voice to the stories of Ukrainians who are fighting today for their freedom against a terrorist state. Alongside spoken text, the performance incorporates bodily and movement-based expression, allowing the performers to convey experiences that are too complex or raw to be captured in words. The play features live music.
